Outreach/Mission Ministry

Cupboard by Grace

The Cupboard by Grace Ministry serves as the area Food Bank for the CBG SackingVernon community. Each Monday, residents of Vernon who are in need, are invited to the pantry to receive groceries and necessary household items, including meat, cheese, milk and fresh produce. The cupboard is managed by FPC of Vernon and is one of our most successful community projects. Cupboard Hours: 2nd and 4th Mondays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. next door to First Presbyterian Church of Vernon.

Common Threads

The purpose of the Common Threads is to provide prayer shawls to church members and friends who are dealing with struggles in their lives. The group meets each Tuesday in the Church Parlor to prayerfully create shawls for people in our community whom they feel need to know their friends and church family are keeping them close to their hearts. The ministry, which began in 2012, has given over two hundred prayer shawls to people in need and is quickly becoming regarded as one of the most heartfelt and appreciated ministries of the church. There is no need to already know how to knit to participate, since the group has several experienced knitters who can teach new participants!

Dulcimer Lessons

Each Thursday night at 4:45 pm, dulcimer lessons are conducted in the choir room. Mary Jane Ethington, our very own choir director, is quite accomplished on the dulcimer and leads the group. Comprised of several residents of the Vernon area, the musicians offer a wonderful treat for all of us. They often share their talents by performing special music during church services throughout the year.

Mission Trips

First Presbyterian Church of Vernon has participated in a number of Mission Trips including helping the people of Belize, Romania and most recently with a trip to Haiti. After returning from these missions, the participants have shared their experiences and photographs with the congregation.

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts

Cub Scout Pack 87 and Boy Scout Troop 87 are charted by the First Presbyterian Church of Vernon, as part of the Greenbelt District of the Northwest Texas Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Each year, the church helps pay for the Boy Scouts to attend a six day summer camp and supports their many endeavors throughout the year.

Vernon ISD Teacher Appreciation

At the beginning of each school year, Vernon teachers are given a token of our appreciation for their devotion to our area children. We realize that their special kind of love and strength should not be taken for granted, so we like to thank them personally. In 2012, hand-knitted dishcloths were supplied to all VISD teachers.  This year, teachers received goodie bags from the church members to encourage a wonderful new school year.

Birthday Cakes to North Texas State Hospital

Every other month, FPC of Vernon bakes birthday cakes for residents at the North Texas State Hospital. Cakes are baked and delivered in January, March, May, July, September and November.
